Norah Jones - Norah Jones - Chasing Pirates

Norah Jones new first single from upcoming album 'The Fall is a short but fantastic song. It brings an immediacy that is not as obvious in some of her previous work; it is at once hypnotic and catchy, occupying an evocative dreamscape of a sleepless night spent distracted by her thoughts. The drums lead a pulsing groove smoothly along, propelling Jones airy voice to the fore, with enigmatic lyrics and a sultry delivery. As a taste of what her album may offer, this is truly enticing.

Soft Toy Emergency - Soft Toy Emergency - Critical

Liverpool's Soft Toy Emergency are creating quite a stir in the electro-pop scene. They have already supported Little Boots, Friendly Fires and N.E.R.D this year and are now carving a name for themselves.

'Critical' is a good electro-pop single although it does seem to lack the punch of say Annie or La Roux - not sure if these are acts that Soft Toy Emergency aspire to, but as successful pioneers of the current electro-pop sound, this is perhaps the direction they should be looking?

That said, the very 80's feel of the simplistic synths and pseudo-punk vocals make this a good alternative...

Old 97s - Old 97s

efore they began to incorporate some slick pop elements into their ramshackle brand of roadhouse rock, Old 97s were one of the bands at the forefront of the alt-country movement. Some of the finest moments of that phase of their career are collected on Wreck Your Life and Then Some: The Complete Bloodshot Recordings, a compilation of the quartet's output for the label. Their sophomore album, 1995's Wreck Your Life, is included here in its original version and sequencing, supplemented by the material from Early Tracks, which compiled some 7" singles and other rarities from the same era.

For the band's...

Miley Cyrus - Miley Cyrus hates the 'Twilight' movies

Miley Cyrus hates the 'Twilight movies - because she doesnt believe in vampires.

The 'Hannah Montana star who has just signed up with 'Twilight producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey to star in 'Wings, a fantasy movie which is similar in plot to the 'Twilight movies - doesnt get why so many people love the story about a school girl who falls in love with a vampire.

The 16-year-old singer said: "I've never seen it and I never will. I don't believe in it. I don't like vampires. I don't like the wolf that pops out of the screen when I'm...

Does It Offend You, Yeah? - Does It Offend You, Yeah?

WEEKEND VIDEO "Dawn of the Dead"You Have No Idea WhatYou're Getting Yourself Into2008iTunes Does It Offend You, Yeah? usually come across as a band to let your hair down and rock-out to at the local disco, or the kind of bleepy-gametronics that could only come from a group that had its brain ripped out and replaced with a vintage games console. But this isn't the case with the morbidly titled "Dawn of the Dead." On this single, the four-piece bridge the gap between electro and an emotive-indie ballad, passing by the soundtracks to your...

Idlewild - Idlewild - Readers & Writers

Every scene has its also-rans, its runners up, its second placers and post Britpop indie is no exception. Now, these monickers may seem harsh at first, however, if you think of all the bands that don't even qualify as also-rans, the forgotten contenders of a time gone by, then finishing second place to Travis et al. may not seem so bad, as you look over your shoulder at Dodgy and the Boo Radleys stumbling over their starting blocks.

Idlewild's shot for the early noughties indie-rock crown was 2002's superb 'The Remote Part', an album whose first three tracks could easily stand...

Miley Cyrus - Miley Cyrus - Party in the USA

Miley Cyrus continues her quest to transform from Hannah Montana into Miley. Her 'Breakout' album started to develop her true rock chick persona, and now in advance of her December arena tour, she has released the first track from her forthcoming The Time Of Our Lives mini album.

Party in the USA is a great uplifting track, showing there is much more to Miley Cyrus than Disney's Hannah Montana.

This track has a great vibe, and tells the story of Miley going from Nashville to LA, name checking Jay-Z and Britney along the way.

Already number 11 in the charts, I think this...

Norah Jones - Norah Jones

aving been billed as Norah Jones's "guitar album," The Fall comes burdened with some expectations that the vocalist has shaken up her trademark formula of tasteful piano arrangements, light percussion, and effortless vocal turns. The album only intermittently works as a departure for Jones, then, because the lone signature element of her style that has changed is the lead instrument she uses. The piano licks are scarce, replaced by some electric guitar riffs that are clean and restrained. Producer Jacquire King simply doesn't bring any of the raw, nervy energy to The Fall that he has brought to albums by...
