Nirvana - Nirvana

In the span of about eight hours, split between two lengthy plane rides between Madrid and San Diego, I read the entirety of Chuck Klosterman's tome on '80s glitter metal, "Fargo Rock City." In one of its most fascinating chapters, Chuck draws numerous parallels between Nirvana's Nevermind and Guns `n' Roses' Appetite for Destruction, stating that the albums are sequenced similarly, the music at times shares some sonic likeness and, hell, Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose even sort of looked alike at the time. Odd as it may sound, he's got a point. Nevermind was a mainstream smash for...

Shadows Fall - Shadows Fall - Retribution

Thank you for making your wildly generous contribution to SomethingPunk.coms metal releases of 2009. After one listen to your new album, Retribution, its clear that the only repeat offense you guys are guilty of is releasing quality albums. As always, the guitar work is amazing. Tracks like the instrumental opener, The Path To Imminent Ruin, Still I Rise, and Embrace Annihilation balance the lines of 80s thrash, metalcore, and melodic hard rock. Even the ballad, Picture Perfect, proves to be a song worth our time which is something that was lacking with all the metal candidates this year. In fact,...

Kittie - Kittie - In The Black

The first time I witnessed Kittie was during the Dynamo festival in the year 2000. They had released their first album Spit in 1999 and because they were the only all female metalband at that time they gained a lot of publicity in the male dominated metal world. Back then wasn’t very impressed by their performance. Although I have to say I did watch their entire show for the same reasons as every other man at that time. Well almost ten years and several bandmembers later Kittie is still around and have released there fifth full-length album called In The...

Atreyu - Atreyu - Congregation Of The Damned

To call your band after the character of The Never Ending Story is probably not the most metal thing to do. Certainly when you play a music style that is dominated by angry dudes who just want to smash in ugly faces. On the other hand it would do good with the girls and I have to say it turned out pretty well for them. Especially since they would move away from the typical metalcore sound over the years and create a more open and softer rock sound.

To be honest I did like some of the early work of Atreyu...

The Fifth Alliance - The Fifth Alliance - Reflections On Consciousness

The Fifth Alliance from Breda, Netherlands has just released a new EP called Reflections On Consciousness. Their previous release was their demo that resulted in a record contract on Crossfirecult Records. According to their MySpace they sound like a heavy grooving sound of controlled dissonance and rhythmic twists.

On their demo Fear Consumption The Fifth Alliance already showed some potential. A minor on that demo is the lack of variety within the music. Their latest effort still has some of the same problems. The first song, ‘Thirteen’, indeed lacks some variety and also some of the mathcore parts are not always right. Sadly...
