The New Pornographers have a signature sound and it's a good one slick, extremely hooky 70s-era AM-radio power-pop. Their songs root into your brain and refuse to let go "Mutiny, I Promise You," off the Vancouver collective's fourth record Challengers, is all layered instrumentation, tight rhythms and sharp, clever harmonies, the kind that made 2005s Twin Cinema such an absolute joy. But frontman Carl Newman, taking a page from his earlier solo record, has shifted gears for most of Challengers, with more introspective lyrics atop slower, chunkier songs that unfortunately drag after a spell.
