Intelligent disco sounds a bit of an oxymoron but there’s a good pedigree over the years like Shriekback, Underworld, mid-period Talking Heads and Pet Shop Boys, to pluck a few names out of the ether. The Chap are another modern pop group combining beats, melodies and artful lyrics. At times you wonder if the tight techno rhythms and well-enunciated vocals are a Mighty Boosh-style parody (clever beats and clever-clever lyrics) but songs like ‘Proper Rock’ (“proper songs about girls and clubbing”) and the remix of ‘Ethnic Instrument’ by some French disco geezer called Joakim dispel your scepticism.
