As you might predict, Dance Party in the Balkans from New Mexico duo Alaska in Winter, is a meeting of the sunny Mediterranean with the icier climbs of the Northern hemisphere. Whereas attempting to combine electronica and world music in this way is admirable, its a union that by no means guarantees successful results. Unfortunately this album falls foul of melding an artificial sound with organic Balkan folk music, losing the warmth of the latter and leaving a sound that has a lifeless synthetic chill.
