John Stirratt and Pat Sansone are multi-instrumentalist members of Wilco but this album has none of that bands experimentalism. Its all classic soft-rock, with impressive arrangements but dull songs. It includes bossa nova jazz (City Bells) and some old-before-your-time Van Morrison soul (Feel You Now) plus the laidback West Coast tones of We Would Never Die. Estate Remains and Simple Explanation have the melodic touches of Big Star and Teenage Fanclub but its really only the small details - the strings on Criminal and the Latin percussion of Canyon Arrow for example - that stop you...
