Review of The Decemberists - The Perfect Crime #2

As a pop song this does the job: immediate, catchy, white-boy funk, a cross between Talking Heads and the cowbell-infatuated Rapture. But this isnt a patch on the imaginative, quirky pop the Decemberists used to make! Colin Meloy liked the phrase so built a song around it but the perfect crime and everything in it are left a bit hazy. Signing to Capitol in the US has been good for their bank balance and nothing else. There are also three remixes; of these, the Doing Time and Junior Boys remixes are utterly merde and follow the infamous remix recipe: take ingredients of song; throw out everything but one shred; slice shred as thinly as possible, add assorted leftover beats and stir in watery synths; stew for 5 minutes longer than you need; serve up with braised cheek as you present invoice.
