A few weeks back I had picked up a couple of CDs at the local independent record store: 1972, which was Josh Rouse's careful paen to that same year in history, and Devendra Banhart's latest, Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. While Rouse's album was essentially his own brand of soft folk-pop festooned with breathy flutes, wah wah guitars and other musical clichs of the era, Banhart's album actually feels more attuned to the post-love-in, pre-cocaine grey area that was the dawning of the seventies.
