A recent study has found that knowing what's going to happen in a book doesn't affect people's enjoyment of it; in fact it gave enjoyment a fillip. This theory doesn't seem to fit quite so readily with new music, well, to my mind anyway. This may be due to the more instant short-sharp, emotional resonance of music, rock music in particular. With that being the case if the first thing you do when you hear a song is think "isn't this just x, y and/or z again?" then it kinda detracts from the experience.
