Pagan/Folk Metal has a tendency to become gimmicky. An accordion doesn’t always mesh well with Death Metal guitar riffs. A flute can’t always work with screaming vocals. Too often these folk instruments can sound tacked on, rushed. As if someone was saying, “Here’s the song. Now play some bagpipes so we can hit that Folk Metal crowd.” This isn’t the case with Russia’s Arkona. "Goi, Rode, Goi!" sounds like the emphasis was on songs in their entirety rather than additions.
