2006’s album “Happy Hollow” was an OTT almost pompous concept album about small town America with a “Wizard Of Oz” undertone, of course it was interesting and exciting and playful; it is Cursive we’re talking about so it was never going to be anywhere near bad, however there were moments of self-consciousness in the stop-start rhythms and their trademark catchy melodies and fantastic lyrics seemed occasionally drowned in quirkiness. With “Mama, I’m Swollen” however the mix is perfect again, these are more cohesive songs, the melodies are ecstatic, uplifting and make you want to scream them out with Tim Kasher...
